WASHINGTON - Catholic University spent Thursday's "Moving Day" moving back to a policy the school held decades ago.

The university is largely ditching co-ed dorms and transitioning back to same-sex residence halls, starting with this fall's freshman class. Seven of the school's eight freshman dorms are now single-sex. The lone holdout dorm is an honors housing building that is co-ed by floor and also houses faculty members.

University President John Garvey says the policy sends a message to students about the respect they should show toward one another. the rest

It's a symbolic gesture and maybe it's a good one but that's all it is.

I lived in a single sex dorm more than 40 years ago. It was a different time and the youth culture was different but having same sex dorms, with strict supervision and curfews is useless unless the kids have already decided to remain chaste anyway.

I'm sure that some of the students in dorms at Catholic U will and some won't. The fact remains however that instituting same sex dorms will breed contempt among those that do and mistrust on the part of those that don't.

Kids that age are very touchy about being treated as adults and the truth of the matter is, you have to start treating people as adults sometime. When exactly is that going to be?

Since the World wide Catholic priest sex abuse scandals, people have stopped regarding priests in the same light, especially as far as authority goes. People now decide for themselves, based on their own relationship with God what is right and what is wrong.By the time they are seventeen, they already have decided. What Catholic U is doing is simply creating a no win, polarizing situation, for themselves, for the students and for the Catholic Church. It puts some students in the position of lying about their actions. It puts the rest of the students in a position of lying to cover up the actions of their friends or informing on them to the housing administration authorities.
