When I am sore beset...

When I am sore beset, I seek some quiet place,
Some lonely room or barren windswept hill,
And there in silence wait apart until
I see again the smile upon God's face;
Until His presence floods me like the dawn,
And I can hear His whispered, "Peace, be still,"
And know the strength to do His will.
I turn to take my load and find it gone.

Hello Mr. Dague.

My mother is Antoinette Goetschius. Out of curiosity, my sister and I googled the first line of her poem - the only one she ever published, the one you posted "When I am sore beset..." just to see if it might be on the web. I thought you might be interested to know that she wrote it in the 1940s while she was working in NYC. She left her home in upstate NY at the age of 16 because the depression was still on, and she needed to make a living. She made friends through her church - she started attending 5th Avenue Presbyterian. She wrote the poem while she was there, and her pastor saw it and asked if he could put it in the bulletin. It also was published in a book called Great Masterpieces of Religious verse. She has kept her faith all her life. She will be 91 years old in September and is growing increasingly senile, but still has a sense of humor and some decent quality of life. My brother, sister, and I all have framed copies of her poem on our walls - my husband printed them up for us in her honor. Regards - Kathy Salk

Dear Kathy,

Thank you for taking the time to write and give the history of this poem-it is one of my favorites! I hope your mother knows how much it has encouraged and blessed many people. I have also sent it to a prayer chain that I am part of to remind us to seek His Face when we are facing many trial.

May the Lord bless you all as you care for your mother-she must be a special lady!

Pat Dague
